What to pack when travelling to India?

I have spent two weeks travelling in India. It was a life-changing trip which I will never forget. However, as a female solo traveller, I had to take certain precautions to make sure my trip was safe and I felt good throughout it.

I had a personal driver at all times with me to travel from one city to another which helped me tremendously! I could simply enjoy every moment not worrying about how to get from one place to another. I did a lot of research before my trip of what to pack so I am well and healthy during the whole journey.

In this article, I will cover everything you need to pack for a trip to India. I will share with you what things will help you to have the most relaxing trip in a country like India and where to buy those things online. Using this India packing list, you will be able to plan your trip quickly and stress free. I will also let you know what I did to avoid 'Delhi Belly' or 'Traveller's Diarrhoea'.

What to wear when travelling to India?

I have visited Rajasthan area in India in October and it was around 30 degrees - pretty hot and humid. If it was ever 30 degrees in Scotland, I would most likely wear shorts and tank tops or short dresses, however, in India you must respect the culture. For travel in Idnia, I recommend packing loose cotton trousers, quick dry yoga pants, a few tank tops, a couple of scarves or shawls, hat, sunglasses, a watch, comfortable leather sandals and trainers.

My biggest recommendation for women travelling to India is to pack a few colourful kimono style cardigans. You can wear them on a tank top and leggings and it looks amazing in pictures. Some of the cardigans can be quite revealing so I usually put on a light scarf to feel comfortable. If you are a white female in India, there are three reasons to cover yourself up - to avoid locals staring at you, not to get sunburn and to protect your body from mosquito bites! Definitely pack some sun screen, mosquito repellents and also after bite creams because those bites can get rather itchy! On another note, for all my documents and cash I found it really useful to have a small cross-body bag which I was carrying with me at all times.

  • Biodegradeable formula.

What to eat and drink when in India and how to avoid 'traveller's diarrhoea'?

I was staying mainly in four-five star hotels which offered different kind of buffets. However, I was extremely careful when choosing my food. I didn't eat any fresh fruit, vegetables or drink tap water (except in Narendra Bhawan Hotel in Bikaner due to its own water purifying system). All I had was cooked, hot food. I am pescatarian so I usually chose to order different kind of breads like naan, chapatis, paratha, kulcha, roti and vegetable or paneer curries with a glass of refreshing Cobra beer. I felt great throughout entire trip so I am glad I was cautious with what I ate. The only downside was gaining 4kg in two weeks but all those mouthwatering Indian dishes were more than worth it!

To make sure my gut health was at its best, two weeks before the trip I have been taking probiotic tablets. I would recommend continue taking them during and after the trip. However, the theory is that the healthier your gut pre-trip, the better equipped it is to deal with new bacteria during your trip so make sure you do it.

15) Probiotic Tablets

My Recommendation:

  • A daily digestive health supplement with 10 billion friendly bacteria per capsule as well as 2 types of natural fibre which feed and encourage the 'friendly' bacteria.

  • Each capsule provides 8 live strains of friendly bacteria which are naturally present in your digestive system, as well as S. boulardii - a strain of friendly yeast.

  • The live bacteria complement the gut flora already present in your digestive system and the total count is guaranteed till the end of shelf life.

  • The capsules do not need to refrigerated and can be stored at room temperature. Suitable for use with antibiotics and as part of a healthy diet.

  • For women, men and children over 12 years. The formulation is Gluten-Free, Wheat-Free, Dairy-Free, GMO-Free and is suitable for vegans.

The main priority when travelling in India is to stay hydrated. I was having electrolyte tablet drinks every single day to make sure my body is hydrated. I have also packed water purifying filter in case I would end up in a situation where no bottled water was available.

I was travelling from one city to another by car, sometimes for four to five hours. During car journeys, it is always a good idea to have a snack bag. Personally, I have brought a massive bag of different high protein snacks like protein bars, nuts and dried fruit. I have also packed my main vitamins with me so I can take them daily. I would recommend these: multivitamin, iron, calcium, magnesium, omega 3 fats and vitamin D supplements.

The last tip not to get food/water poisoning when in India, is to always use hand sanitisers and tissues making sure your hands are clean at all times.
