Discovering Luxury, Royal Life and Rat Temple in Bikaner, Rajasthan
Updated: May 5, 2020
My few days in Bikaner have been very memorable mainly because I stayed in the most beautiful hotel I have ever seen. I was welcomed with a glass of fresh jasmine water and friendly hotel staff. Narendra Bhawan Bikaner is not an ordinary hotel. It has own water cleaning system which is so advanced that it allows their guests drink tap water. This stylish place illustrates the life and story of the last reigning Maharaja of Bikaner, His Highness Narendra Singh Ji (1948-2003). Designed as a Grand Residence, the hotel's interiors are a landscape of memories where wisdom and wonder interweave. This boutique hotel offers contemporary luxury and comfort surrounded by unconventional design and antiques from all over the world.
I have also been pleasantly surprised by the impressive 16th-century Junagarh Fort. The fort complex consists of colourful palaces, courtyards, balconies and pavilions. Elaborately decorated walls, ornamented with carved stones, marbles, paintings and semi-precious stones, leave you a long-lasting impression.
If you ever in Bikaner, I would recommend visiting their local Camel Farm where you can try out fresh camel milk. It was also very interesting to see Devi Kund Sagar - Royal Cenotaphs. However, my biggest recommendation would be to visit Deshnok - the Rat Temple or Karni Mata Temple. First, I was terrified to visit this place but in the end it was absolutely worth it. Due to the local legend, rats have been held sacred there for over 600 years. It is believed that, it is a good sign to see a white rat while you are in there and I was blessed to see one during my visit! Bikaner will always be one of the most incredible travel memories.
